Text Box: “The Potluck Cookbook”
Potluck dinners have been an important part of the social life of the church from the beginning so it seems appropriate to make one a part of our 50th anniversary celebration. So, on Saturday evening August 7th we’ll have a gourmet Potluck Supper planned by Elaine Law and Sheryl Linsenmayer. They will prepare roast pork and the rest of us will provide other dishes. We are asked to bring enough for 8-10 people to provide for our guests from out of town. Information on how to sign up is in the enclosed flyer. In planning your dish, a good place to start would be our own Potluck Recipes Cookbook, published by a group of UU cooks in 1990 and now a collectors’ item.

Betty Hostetler wrote the following description of their trials and tribulations.

“In the late 1980s Enid Shepeard came up with the idea
of a cookbook and advanced the money needed to make it
happen. It would be easy because most of us liked to cook
and had plenty of recipes to share. Well, Enid contacted
a couple of “cookbook publishers” and even had one fellow
come to her house to show us what he could do for us.
Ha! His price was way out of our range and I believe we
would have had to order a tremendous number of books.

Next, Shirley Fencl said she would type and edit the
recipes on her computer and all we would need to do then
was to have them printed by a local printer. Ha! Ha!
Shirley didn’t know what she was getting into. And we
thought we could sell one thousand cookbooks easily.
Well, it wasn’t that easy. It was published in 1990 and
sales went well at the start but then fell off and boxes of
books filled up closets and cabinets. We finally sold and
gave away the last of the cookbooks a couple of years ago.”

The committee members were Georgianne Clayton,
Margaret Conelley, Ramona Davidson, Shirley Fencl,
Betty Hostetler, Peggy Kelly, Jan Rice, and Enid
Shepeard.

“I must say it is a good cookbook and we have a lot of good memories and we did make a fair amount of money selling them, but wouldn’t suggest doing another cookbook any time soon!” --Don and Betty Hostetler
