People—Wallace White

Wallace White, one of our more infamous members, owned several snakes—as well as a ferret and a dog named Erika.  Wallace often brought his snakes to church for R.E. classes.  Word got around and several of our children were asked by their friends if we were “Snake handlers.”

Erika used to wait patiently in Wallace’s red van (with canoes atop) during the service.  We once had a big discussion about whether Erika could join us in the service.

For several years, Wallace was in charge of the Sunday service following New Year’s.  The focus of Wallace’s service was to have everyone write down on little sheets of paper all the hurts, problems, etc. they had from the previous year.  Then they would burn them in a small brazier to indicate that they were released from these “negatives.”  Unfortunately, in one service (probably his last), he almost burned down the building when the fire got out of control.

At the 1976 Fourth of July Celebration at the church, Wallace donated a replica of the Liberty Bell to the church.  The Liberty Bell presently resides in the back of the Sanctuary. (Wallace served as Church President that year.)
