Constitution of the
Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta
Preamble
In order to fulfill our chosen mission: To create a
caring religious community that respects each individual,
seeks truth and meaning, promotes peace and justice, and
supports others who share these values, we do hereby
ordain and establish this constitution as a covenantal
document.
Article I
Name: This organization shall be known as the
Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta.
Article II
Form: The form of organization shall be a not-for-profit
corporation of perpetual duration, according to the laws
of the state of Georgia, and shall be fully quaified in
compliance with the provisions of the United States
Internal Revenue Code, Sections 501 (c) (3) , as amended,
as a religious and charitable organization. In accordance
with the requirements of these laws, upon dissolution,
all remaining assets must be assigned to the benefit of
the Unitarian Universalist Association or its successor
which may qualify as a not-for-profit organization.
Article III
Membership & Governance: Membership in this
organization and its form of governance shall be defined
in Bylaws in accordance with applicable statutes.
Membership implies a covenantal bond to affirm and
promote the mission of the church as set forth in the
Preamble, but there shall never be any creedal test for
membership.
Article IV
Affiliation: This organization shall maintain
its status as a independent congregational member of the
Unitarian Universalist Association and such affiliate
organizations or subsidiary jurisdictions as may be
designated from time to time by the governing body and
the appropriate authority of the Association.
Article V
Adoption & Amendment: This Constitution
shall be effective as of August 15th, 1999
upon affirmative vote of three-quarters of those members
present and voting at a duly called meeting of the
membership. Subsequent amendments may be proposed by
majority vote of the governing body, subject to approval
by the membership under the procedures set forth for
adoption.
